No. The domain controller is recommended because these computers are rarely turned off. The Active Director (AD) Connector can be installed on any domain-connected computer. However, if the machine is turned off, ALL AD Management features will be disabled. For example, importing users from AD or updating AD passwords. Here are the system requirements:
