Do you need Internet to use GateKeeper?

Overview

This article explains when GateKeeper requires an internet connection and how offline functionality works on both workstations and the GateKeeper Hub.

GateKeeper Workstation Functionality (Offline Mode)

GateKeeper does not require internet access for daily authentication. The workstation will continue functioning using the last synced settings.

What continues to work offline

• Locking and unlocking the computer using your token and PIN

• Cached user credentials (AES-256 encrypted)

Important Notes

• Users can continue logging in even if the network is unavailable.

• Policy changes, password updates, and permission changes will not apply until the computer reconnects to the Hub or network.

When the Internet Is Required

1. Hub License Validation

The GateKeeper Hub requires internet access when a license is being added or validated.

The Hub must be able to reach:

• https://gkchain.com

• https://dl.gkchain.com

If these URLs are blocked, the Hub can not validate the license.

2. Hub Features That Require Internet

Some Hub components depend on an active internet connection:

• Scheduled Reports

• Alerts & Notifications

• Downloads (Hub & Client installers/updates)

These features will pause until the Hub reconnects to the internet.

Enterprise Cloud Hub Behavior

For organizations using the GateKeeper Cloud Hub:

• Password changes

• Token assignments

• Role or permission updates

• User additions/removals

…will sync automatically once workstations are back online.

If the workstation is offline, it will continue using its previously cached settings until the next sync.

• GateKeeper authentication works offline.

• Workstations rely on cached, encrypted credentials.

• Hub licensing and several Hub features require internet access.

• Any updates or policy changes apply only after the next successful sync.
