GateKeeper Transparent Lock Explained
What is Transparent Lock?
Unlike a standard lock that brings up the Windows lock screen, Transparent Lock keeps the current desktop visible while restricting user input. The screen remains viewable, but the keyboard and mouse are disabled until the screen is completely locked and an authorized GateKeeper user returns to unlock the computer.
How It Works
Transparent Lock is a GateKeeper feature designed to automatically lock down a computer when the authorized user steps away, without returning to the Windows Lockscreen. This functionality is especially valuable in high-uptime environments like manufacturing, labs, or production testing, where continuous visibility of a process is essential across multiple shifts.
GateKeeper continuously monitors the proximity of the logged-in user's token (hardware token or mobile app). If the token moves out of range, the system activates Transparent Lock:
The display remains visible, showing real-time data or machine status.
User input is restricted, preventing unauthorized access.
When a new user with an authorized token arrives, they can log in and regain control without interrupting the ongoing display.
Use Case: Manufacturing Environments
In industries such as manufacturing and electronics testing, machines may operate 24/7, often with three rotating shifts. Transparent Lock enables:
Technicians on the next shift can view the testing status or machine output immediately upon arrival.
Protection from unauthorized interaction with the system between shifts.
Seamless shift transitions without logging out or restarting applications.
Key Benefits
Maintains productivity while preserving security.
Prevents screen blackout or interruptions in long-running tasks.
Eliminates the need for manual locking/unlocking between users.
