Password Fatigue explained.
Password fatigue (or "password stress") is the stress caused by forgetting passwords, mistyping passwords, and the general the large number of ever-changing, complex password combinations to constantly memorize and type multiple times per day for computer login, website login, OTP login, and more. Too many passwords to remember and type. The problem is that good security means unique usernames and passwords that are both long and complex (high entropy). However, the potentially high amount of stress involved in memorizing and typing these long passwords on a daily basis takes a strong toll on the users. The reasons for password fatigue vary but some common reasons are as follows:
- Too many complex passwords to remember
- Retyping usernames and passwords repeatedly
- Forgotten password incidents
- Mistyping passwords
- Password reset incidents cause significant downtime and helpdesk costs
- Passwords change too much
- Getting locked out of an account due to mistyping or forgetting password
- Rigid password policy enforcement by organization
Consequences of password stress / fatigue:
- Overall poor password habits
- Users habitually creating weaker passwords
- Users creating passwords that are easy to crack/brute force
- Writing passwords down on insecurely placed paper and/or spreadsheets
- Recycling the same passwords for multiple accounts
- Insecurely sharing passwords with other people
- Perpetuating a culture and habit of poor password hygiene with other users
- Overall weaker security posture for the organization
