Yes. Pressing Win+L will lock the computer normally, even when GateKeeper is installed. The workstation will go to the Windows lock screen as expected.
However, the effectiveness of Win+L depends on which Unlock Method you are using in GateKeeper.
When Win+L Works Normally
If your Unlock Method is set to:
Token + PIN
Proximity Only
Password Only
Then pressing Win+L will lock the computer, and it will remain locked until you authenticate again. GateKeeper will not automatically log you back in.
When Win+L May Immediately Log You Back In
The computer may unlock again right after pressing Win+L if:
Touch to Unlock is enabled, and the user taps the token onto the USB sensor immediately after locking
Proximity settings are very sensitive, allowing unlock as soon as the token is detected nearby
In these cases, the lock-unlock sequence happens quickly because GateKeeper sees valid authentication right after the lock command.
How to Ensure Win+L Keeps the Computer Locked
If you want the workstation to stay locked after using Win+L:
Use Token + PIN or Password as the Unlock Method
Avoid touching the token to the USB sensor immediately after locking
Increase the unlock range so that immediate re-authentication does not occur
Step slightly out of unlock proximity if needed
These steps will prevent GateKeeper from unlocking the workstation unintentionally.
Summary
| Unlock Method | Win+L Behavior |
|---|---|
| Touch to Unlock | Locks, but may unlock immediately if token is tapped on the sensor |
| Token + PIN | Locks and stays locked |
| Proximity Only | Locks and stays locked, as long as proximity threshold does not trigger an immediate unlock |
| Password Only | Locks and stays locked |
GateKeeper does not interfere with Windows locking, but depending on unlock settings, you may need to adjust your proximity sensitivity or avoid touching the token immediately after locking.
